Letter Knowledge
In this section you will find ideas, information and literacy activities for children aged up to 3 years.
How should I refer to the letters- by letter names or letter sounds?
Children need to know both. Letter sounds can be tricky - "a" can say "ah" as is apple, "ay" as in acorn or Amy and let's not get into was! At this age children are at the hearing and saying stage. I suggest you use letter names when referring to letters i.e. "look there's an "M" you have that letter at the beginning of your name" and emphasis the sound the letter makes within the word. e.g. Mmmark.
Letter search

Teaching Objective: Recognising letters:

Choose a letter - one in your child’s name.
Write the letter on a sheet of paper.
With your child find examples of the letter in newspapers and magazines. You can use a highlighter pen or a yellow felt tip pen to mark the letters found. You could cut out the letters and stick them on the sheet of paper.

Teaching Objective:Knowing the letter name:

Talk about the letter name e.g. “lets look for a “c” etc.”

Teaching Objective: Knowing the letter sound:

Make a collection of objects which begin with that letter. Emphasis the initial sound by stretching out the word as you say it:
C...at

Play “I spy with my little eye something beginning with ... “ ask your child to guess what it is.
Name Jigsaw:
Make a jigsaw using the letters of your child’s name.
